About

Most auspicious day of the year. New ventures, marriages, gold purchases and donations on this day never diminish.

Falls on
Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, April or May. One of the four abujh muhurat days.
Also called
Akha Teej, Akti, Akshaya Trutiya, Parashurama Jayanti (same day)

The story

Akshaya means that which never decreases. The Treta Yuga began on this day; Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha; the Ganga descended; Krishna gave Draupadi the akshaya patra, the vessel that never emptied; and Sudama's handful of poha, offered to Krishna, returned as endless abundance.

How it is observed

No muhurat is needed for anything, weddings, business openings, property registration and new ventures all cluster here. Gold and silver are bought. Charity is emphasised, particularly of water, food and fans. In Jainism it ends the year-long fast of Rishabhanatha, broken with sugarcane juice.

Food

Sattu, cooling foods, sugarcane juice. In the south, panakam and buttermilk.

Regional variation

In Odisha it is the day rice sowing begins and the Puri Rath Yatra chariot-building starts. Bengal keeps it as Halkhata, when traders open new account books. The gold-buying custom is strongest in the west and south.

Common questions

Do you have to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya?
Not at all, that's a much later custom, and largely a commercial one. What the day traditionally means is that anything begun on it keeps growing rather than wearing out, which is why it's used for weddings, opening businesses and starting anything without needing a muhurat calculated. Charity is emphasised at least as much as buying. Gold got attached to the idea and the jewellers ran with it.
